Q: How do I become a licensed nail technician in Hawai'i?

A: You must pass the Hawai'i State Board Licensing Exam. In order to take the exam, the State of Hawai'i requires you to complete a 350 hour course in an accredited school or apprentice for 700 hours at a beauty salon under a licensed nail technician.

Q: How do I know if a person, shop or school is licensed or accredited?

A: You may enter the name of a person or establishment at Professional and Vocational Licensing (PVL) website to see if they are licensed.

Q: How can I take the Licensing Exam?

A: Upon completion of your requirements, you may submit application form to Department of Commerce & Consumer Affairs (DCCA). (Upon completion of our Licensing Course, La Mer will provide an application form & transcripts to submit to DCCA.) All documents must be received by DCCA 7 weeks prior to the scheduled exam date. Upon approval of your application, the DCCA will send you a registration form for the exam given by Prometric (test center). The registration deadline is 1 month before the scheduled exam date.

Q: How much is the Application fee?

A: The application fee is $20. If you are applying for a temporary permit, there is an additional fee of $40.

Q: How much is the Licensing Exam fee?

A: The Licensing Exam fee is $90. Prometric allows you to review your exam for additional $50 & you may take notes, however, you may not take the notes outside of their property. If you do not pass the exam & must retake, it will be another $90.

Q: When & where can I take the Licensing Exam?

A: The exam is given in January, May & October at the Prometric Test Center. Prometric accepts walk-ins for approved candidates for an additional fee of $50. You may check their schedule on the Prometric website or call 808.261.8182 for more information.

Q: Can I use dictionary for the Licensing Exam?

A: No. All examinations are conducted in English & any form of dictionary is prohibited.

Q: When will I know if I passed the Licensing Exam?

A: Exam results will be mailed to you within 2 weeks.

Q: What is a temporary permit & how long is the temporary permit good for?

A: The temporary permit allows you to train & work in a licensed beauty shop under supervision of a licensed beauty operator. It is good for the period of 3 consecutively scheduled examinations (approx. 1 year).
